A couple photos prior to use heading out for a walk with the baby.

This picture is of myself, prepared for work at the new job, with my daughter, age 9 and 1/2 months.

With our upcoming move on Monday there has been a lot of thought about where we've come from and where we're going. A lot of change in this week from new jobs, to new neighborhoods, departing family and feelings of loss around leaving our existing neighborhood. To illustrate the change in one dimension of our life this photo is from day 2 of my daughter's life. Compare the size of my hand to the size of her body.

I spent the day with my daughter today. She played quietly with her toys and I worked on additions to a website proposal for a hepatology and gastroenterology website. They built my estimate into a grant proposal and we'll see what comes out of it. It could turn into a fairly signifigant amount of additional funding. In the afternoon my daughter and I went down to Kits pool to go swimming. She has no problem putting her face in the water. However, she hasn't figured out that she needs to close her mouth at the same time. :-) Lots of splashing, kicking and general arm waving. It is going to hard to leave Kitsilano. It really hit home sitting in the shallow water with my daughter and looking up with the entire north shore mountain range as the backdrop.
EFF Scores Landmark Win for P2P

California - Today the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals made a crucial decision in support of technology innovators by declaring that distributors of the peer-to-peer software Grokster and Morpheus cannot be held liable for the infringing activities of their users. The Electronic Frontier Foundation argued on behalf of Streamcast, the creator of the Morpheus software, in a case that pitted dozens of entertainment conglomerates against two small software companies. The Ninth Circuit decision is based in part on the fact that P2P networks have significant non-infringing uses, and that they can help artists earn money. The ruling is similar to the Supreme Court's decision in the 1984 Betamax case, which determined that Sony was not liable for copyright violations by users of the Betamax VCR...

Been back coding and designing pretty much full time over the last two days. I'd forgotten how much rage one can build up toward the computer and the empheral electrons when they don't behave as they are supposed to. Yelling at the computer is a key part of the symbiotic relationship.

ESPN.com Page 2 - The greatest sports commercial: "I don't care what you see and hear on television tonight. The best sports commercial of the last 25 years is Nike's See Lance Ride spot launched earlier this summer. Ask me about the 25 years before and I'll say the same thing. Ask me about the quarter century still to come and my answer won't change.
Interactive Narratives
Interactive narratives are informational and storytelling experiences designed and produced for the web. They leverage great design, visual journalism and rich-media content. Some great examples of well done online multimedia journalism.

Newsroom New Images Florida after Hurricane Charley

One of the unfortunate effects of suntan lotion on a small child. Also, another reason not to trust your parents. :-) Took my daughter swimming again at Kits pool today. Water was a little cooler than earlier in the week but she giggled and laughed anyways.

The Atlantic Online | September 2004 | Inside Al-Qaedas Hard Drive | Alan Cullison: " y acquisition of the al-Qaeda computers was unique in the experience of journalists covering radical Islam. In the 1990s the police had seized computers used by al-Qaeda members in Kenya and the Philippines, but journalists and historians learned very little about the contents of those computers; only some information from them was released in U.S. legal proceedings. A much fuller picture would emerge from the computers I obtained in Kabul (especially the IBM desktop), which had been used by al-Qaeda's leadership. "
TrustedReviews: " If you want a PC that's truly silent, you need it to be completely passive, and that means that you can't go for your run of the mill, mix and match PC build you're going to have to go to a specialist and one such specialist is Hush Technologies."

Looks great and makes no noise. Add it to the list.

Tom Waits: The Heart of Saturday Night - Lyrics:
"Well you gassed her up
Behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one
In your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
You're looking for the heart of Saturday night"

Have to love the itunes shuffle. Listening to the Holly Cole version of this song. Great track.

We spent a relaxing BC day. I went off too the gym in the morning and then the three of us headed out to Maple Ridge to meet up with my brother and sister-in-law and assorted friends.
It was a hot sunny day with high cloud and a light breeze. We managed to pack all the baby stuff, assorted wines, cheeses and tasty snacks and head down to the Alouette River. My brother and his friends spent many a summer day paddling around by Silver Bridge. We hung out through the afternoon talking, paddling in the river and playing with the baby. We had a nice salmon dinner with family in the evening and sat in the back yard tallking about the events of the weekend.

Now that's talking trash....

"We're gonna be straight," O'Neal said. "I was down here the other day working out with the kid from Vanderbilt we got (second-round pick Matt Freije), and I told him, 'I'm gonna come across the block, and if I get doubled, I'm gonna pass the ball to you and you're gonna have a wide-open jumper, or (forward) Udonis Haslem is gonna come down the lane and he's gonna get a dunk, and you're all gonna get big contracts.' He said, 'What do you mean?' I said, 'Just look at the history. Travis Knight. Horace Grant. A.C. Green.' He said, 'Shaq, you're one of the coolest guys I've met.' "
